The Emergence of EG.5 (Eris): Unraveling the Dominant COVID Variant

Introduction

The SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19 has proven itself to be a master of adaptation. Since its initial outbreak in late 2019, the virus has undergone numerous mutations, leading to the emergence of various variants with distinct characteristics. One such variant that has recently captured the attention of scientists and health experts is EG.5 (Eris). Scientists are keeping an eye on the new lineage BA.2.86 because of the 36 mutations that distinguish it from the currently dormant XBB.1.5 variant.

The B.A.2.86 spreads faster and causes more serious illness than previous versions. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has said to be germ-aware and to take precautionary measures where needed.

The mutations of Sars-Covid-2 infections and hospitalizations have been on the rise in the USA, Europe, and Asia, which has been attributed in recent months to the EG.5 (Eris) subvariant a descendant of the Omricon lineage that first emerged in November 2021, according to Professor Francois Balloux Director of Computational Systems in Biology at the UCL Genetics Institute, Univesity College London.

Additionally, the UK Health Security Agency has said this week that another variant of Pirola has been found in the UK which was previously restricted to Denmark and Israel. It concluded cases were found in patients who had not traveled, meaning it was spread internally within the UK.

The Emergence of EG.5 (Eris)

EG.5 (Eris), named after the Greek goddess of strife and discord. Like other variants, Eris is characterized by a unique set of mutations in its spike protein, the part of the virus that binds to human cells and facilitates infection. These mutations can affect the virus’s transmissibility, severity of illness, and response to existing treatments and vaccines.

What sets Eris apart is its increased transmissibility compared to previous variants. Initial studies suggest that it spreads more easily from person to person, potentially leading to higher infection rates. This rapid transmission has raised concerns among public health officials and experts, as it could strain healthcare systems and lead to a surge in cases.

Implications for Public Health

The dominance of the EG.5 (Eris) variant could have significant implications for public health strategies. With its heightened transmissibility, controlling its spread might require stricter measures than those used for previous variants. Vaccination campaigns will play a crucial role in curbing the variant’s impact. However, the efficacy of existing vaccines against EG.5 (Eris) is still under investigation, and booster shots tailored to target specific mutations might be needed.

The potential for increased severity of illness associated with EG.5 (Eris) is also a concern. If the variant leads to more severe cases of COVID-19, healthcare systems could be overwhelmed with a higher number of hospitalizations and critical cases. This underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance, preparedness, and flexibility in response strategies.

Global Response and Mitigation Efforts

Governments and health organizations worldwide are closely monitoring the EG.5 (Eris) variant and adapting their strategies accordingly. This includes enhancing genomic surveillance to track the variant’s spread, implementing targeted travel restrictions, and emphasizing the importance of adhering to preventive measures such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and physical distancing.

Researchers are also working diligently to understand EG.5 (Eris’s) characteristics, such as its transmissibility, severity, and response to treatments. This knowledge is crucial for developing updated vaccines and therapeutics that can effectively combat the variant.

Currently, there is no indication that EG.5 (Eris) is any more dangerous than the last strain according to Yale Medicine whereby Scott Roberts MD a Yale Infectious Disease Specialist has been quoted as saying I am not aware of data that suggests EG.5 leads to worse cases of COVID-19 compared to prior variants“. However early reports have shown EG.5 has been spreading faster than any other currently circulating strain. https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/covid-eg5-eris-latest-coronavirus-strain

The latest government data confirmed since August 5th, 2023 (5,250) Covid Cases in England and (205) cases in Wales.

The Who advises people with mild symptoms should manage their care at home and take precautionary measures of germ awareness so as not to spread the virus.

Germ Awareness: Understanding the Invisible Threats Around Us

In a world that is increasingly interconnected and fast-paced, germ awareness has taken on a new level of importance. The invisible threats posed by germs and pathogens are something we encounter daily, yet often underestimate. From simple colds to more severe infections, maintaining a high level of germ awareness is crucial to our well-being and the health of those around us.

The Microscopic World Around Us

Germs, short for microorganisms, are tiny living beings that exist all around us. They include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microscopic organisms. While many of these microorganisms are harmless or even beneficial, some can cause illness and infections. This invisible world is constantly interacting with our lives, and being aware of its presence is the first step towards minimizing the risks associated with germs.

The Importance of Germ Awareness

Germ awareness refers to understanding the potential risks of germs and taking proactive measures to prevent their spread. This awareness goes beyond a basic understanding of hygiene; it involves recognizing the various ways germs can be transmitted and implementing strategies to mitigate those risks. By being aware of germs and their potential impact, individuals can make informed decisions about their daily activities and practices.

Modes of Germ Transmission

Germs can be transmitted through various modes, including:

  1. Direct Contact: Physical contact with an infected person, their bodily fluids, or contaminated surfaces can transfer germs.
  2. Airborne Transmission: Microscopic droplets containing germs can be released into the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and can be inhaled by others.
  3. Fomite Transmission: Germs can survive on surfaces for varying periods, making it possible for individuals to contract them by touching contaminated objects and then touching their face, mouth, or eyes.
  4. Food and Water: Consuming contaminated food or water can introduce harmful germs into the body, leading to gastrointestinal infections.
  5. Vector-borne Transmission: Some germs are transmitted through vectors such as insects, like mosquitoes carrying diseases like malaria or Zika virus.

Practicing Germ Awareness

  1. Regular Hand Hygiene: Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public places, using the restroom, or touching surfaces, is one of the most effective ways to prevent germ transmission.
  2. Respiratory Hygiene: Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing can prevent the spread of germs through respiratory droplets.
  3. Disinfection: Regularly disinfecting frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and smartphones can help reduce the risk of germ transmission.
  4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): In certain situations, wearing masks, gloves, or other protective gear can help minimize the risk of germs spreading, especially during disease outbreaks.
  5. Vaccination: Getting vaccinated against preventable diseases is a crucial step in reducing the impact of germs on public health.
  6. Staying Home When Sick: Avoiding public spaces and social interactions when you are sick can prevent the spread of germs to others.

Germ Awareness in the Digital Age

The digital age has both facilitated and complicated germ awareness. On one hand, the rapid dissemination of information allows for more widespread knowledge about germs and how to prevent their spread. On the other hand, misinformation can also spread quickly, leading to confusion and incorrect practices.

Educational Campaigns and Public Health

Public health agencies and organizations play a vital role in promoting germ awareness. Educational campaigns, workshops, and resources aimed at promoting proper hygiene and sanitation practices can have a significant impact on reducing the transmission of diseases.

Educational Campaigns and Public Health Initiatives: Promoting Germ Awareness in Schools and Businesses

Where global travel and interconnectedness are the norms, the importance of germ awareness cannot be overstated. Germs, whether in the form of bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms, can spread rapidly and cause significant health risks. Educational campaigns and public health initiatives focused on germ awareness are crucial for promoting proper hygiene practices, preventing outbreaks, and maintaining the well-being of individuals in schools and businesses alike.

Germ Awareness in Schools: Nurturing Healthy Habits from a Young Age

Schools are a breeding ground for the exchange of germs due to the close proximity of students and the sharing of common spaces. Educating children about germ awareness not only safeguards their health but also empowers them to make informed decisions about hygiene practices. Here’s how educational campaigns can be effective in schools:

  1. Interactive Workshops: Engaging workshops that teach students about germs, how they spread, and the importance of proper hygiene can leave a lasting impact on young minds.
  2. Visual Aids and Posters: Placing informative posters in restrooms, classrooms, and common areas can serve as constant reminders for students to wash their hands, cover their mouths when sneezing, and avoid sharing personal items.
  3. Role-Playing Activities: Through role-playing scenarios, students can learn how germs can spread in various situations and practice appropriate responses.
  4. Peer Educators: Older students can be trained as peer educators to share their knowledge about germ awareness with their younger peers.
  5. Hygiene Competitions: Organizing fun competitions related to hygiene practices can make learning about germs enjoyable and memorable.
  6. Parent Involvement: Including parents in educational campaigns extends the message beyond school hours, encouraging consistent practices at home.

Germ Awareness in Businesses: Ensuring a Healthy Work Environment

Businesses have a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy working environment for their employees. Germ awareness campaigns in the workplace not only protect employees’ well-being but also contribute to higher productivity and reduced absenteeism.

Here’s how businesses can promote germ awareness:

  1. Employee Training: Regular training sessions on germ awareness can educate employees about proper hygiene practices and their role in maintaining a clean workplace.
  2. Sanitization Stations: Placing hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes in common areas encourages employees to clean their hands and workspaces regularly.
  3. Workspace Design: Designing workspaces that allow for physical distancing and easy access to handwashing facilities can minimize the spread of germs.
  4. Sick Leave Policies: Encouraging employees to stay home when they are sick without fear of repercussions prevents the spread of illnesses within the workplace.
  5. Virtual Awareness Campaigns: Utilizing digital platforms to disseminate information about germ awareness can reach a wider audience and accommodate remote workers.
  6. Cleanliness Checks: Implementing regular cleanliness checks and audits can ensure that hygiene protocols are being followed consistently.

Collaboration with Public Health Organizations

Collaboration with public health organizations and local health authorities can enhance the effectiveness of educational campaigns. These organizations can provide accurate and up-to-date information, resources, and training materials. They can also assist in measuring the impact of the campaigns and adjusting strategies based on the feedback received.

Measuring the Impact

The success of germ awareness campaigns can be measured through various metrics, including reduced absenteeism, fewer reported cases of illness, increased use of hand hygiene facilities, and improved adherence to hygiene practices.

Conclusion

The emergence of the Eris variant as a dominant strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has reignited the global conversation surrounding COVID-19.

As we navigate this new phase of a potential pandemic, collaboration between scientists, governments, and communities is essential to effectively curb the spread of Eris and minimize its impact.

While uncertainties remain, our ability to respond to this ever-changing virus has improved since the early days of the pandemic. By staying informed, following public health guidelines, and supporting ongoing research efforts, we can collectively contribute to the management of COVID-19 and its variants.

As we move forward, the lessons learned from previous variants remind us that adaptability, cooperation, and innovation will be key to overcoming the challenges posed by Eris and any future variants that may arise.

Germ awareness is not about living in constant fear of invisible threats but rather about empowering ourselves with the knowledge to make informed decisions. By understanding how germs spread and implementing preventive measures in our daily lives, we can contribute to a healthier and safer environment for ourselves and our communities. So, let’s embrace germ awareness and work together to keep our world free from unnecessary illnesses.

Educational campaigns and public health initiatives on germ awareness play a crucial role in preventing the spread of infections and promoting the health of individuals in schools and businesses. By instilling proper hygiene practices from a young age and maintaining them in professional settings, we can create a healthier and safer environment for everyone. These campaigns not only raise awareness about the potential risks but also empower individuals to take control of their health and contribute to a germ-conscious society.

With the new Covid-19 variant ‘Omicron’ announcements from Boris Johnson yesterday declaring an emergency booster rollout, it is only fitting to teach the population about germ awareness and cross-contamination.

The Prime Minister said that the country is facing an emergency in its battle with the new variant, adding that no one should be in any doubt that a tidal wave of Omicron is coming and two doses do not afford enough protection. He warned: “Do not make the mistake of thinking Omicron can’t hurt you; can’t make you and your loved ones seriously ill.

Note From The Editor

Considering some people are complacent about germs, what I mean by this is young people in general who have no regard for authority, will do as they please and their way of thinking is rules can be broken.

In fact, I know that lateral tests are sent via text message from the NHS, so what is stopping a young person from copying and pasting the text, changing the Name and DOB of the Recipient they are Forwarding the message on to (their friend who has not has a test done and who has not been vaccinated) for the recipient to change the name of their contact to NHS?

If the government thinks this is not going on, then they are very naive.

The nightclub doormen check the phones but do they go as far as checking the contact name has not been purposely changed to look like it was the NHS that sent the text? I highly doubt it, that is why we are in the mess now.

The consequences of people’s actions cause a domino effect and in turn catastrophic events.

What the Government & NHS should do when sending out text messages is have a photo document rather than text that cannot be edited. They should also get doormen of nightclubs and venues to cross-reference lateral flow tests and passports on the NHS app using a tablet on entry to verify the person using a unique number or barcode. The Government should also impose hefty fines for anyone attempting to scam them.

COVID-19_SMS_and_Text_Message_Scams

How about lockdowns? I have heard on the grapevine and written about it before when we had the first lockdown, young people turn their phones and smart TVs off and party like there is no tomorrow. The pen pushers in Government need to get their act together and have their ears down to the ground to see exactly what is going on.

If the new variant is spiraling out of control, I have one question, if everyone was careful, to begin with, washed their hands, maintained social distancing, not had any Christmas Parties during Lockdown, how come we are on an imminent ‘Tidal Wave’ where the Covid alert level has been raised from 3 to 4 due to the rapid spread of cases?

With the new variant ‘Omnicron’, on our doorstep, this domain name www.germawareness.co.uk is an excellent opportunity to teach how germs are spread.

It could also have an eCommerce shop selling PPE and antibacterial products and a community forum. This domain could also act as a platform to teach children about germs.

Obviously, there will always be people that think that rules do not apply to them and will be complacent about the virus and no amount of media amplification will change their way of thinking, however, the government needs to watch the young people and what they are doing and keep their ears at ground level.

Furthermore, a Covid passport covers you for 3 weeks but what if you do not know you are a carrier, how is the passport supposed to protect the population?

I should be the next prime minister, move over BJ.

A (.co.uk) is the preferred choice of domain name extension for the British public.

Saliva Cross Contamination of Germs

SALIVA & MAIL CROSS CONTAMINATION OF GERMS

EBOLA

You would think dealing with the Corona Pandemic was already enough for us to deal with for the rest of our lives but wait for it there is something else lurking on the horizon. In fact, 6 countries have been placed on ‘Urgent Alert’ amidst a new “EBOLA” outbreak.

Ebola kills through organ failure and severe bleeding and is very transmissible through body fluids. During the 2013 to 2016 Ebola outbreak more than 11,000 people died across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

https://londonlovesbusiness.com/six-countries-placed-on-urgent-alert-amid-new-ebola-outbreak/

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cjnwl8q4qj1t/ebola-virus

https://news.sky.com/story/guinea-declares-ebola-epidemic-as-it-reports-at-least-three-deaths-12218508

So what has Saliva and Mail got to do with anything, I hear you cry?

Saliva & Mail.

People send letters and parcels all over the world everyday and yes most parcels and envelopes use postage stamps other than the ones that use franking machines then this does not apply.

What does a person do to seal an envelope or stick a stamp:

So what does a person do when they stick a stamp on an envelope or parcel or seals an envelope?……they use in most cases their own saliva.

Therefore what happens when you have just stuck an envelope down nice and wet or stuck a postage stamp, you have now smeared your germs right across and have successfully contaminated the said item.

How long can germs live on surfaces:

Different Kinds of Surfaces

Metal Examples: doorknobs, jewelry, silverware 5 days

Wood Examples: furniture, decking 4 days

Plastics Examples: milk containers and detergent bottles, subway and bus seats, backpacks, elevator buttons 2 to 3 days

Stainless steel Examples: refrigerators, pots and pans, sinks, some water bottles 2 to 3 days

Cardboard Examples: shipping boxes 24 hours

Copper Examples: pennies, teakettles, cookware 4 hours

Aluminum Examples: soda cans, tin-foil, water bottles 2 to 8 hours

Glass Examples: drinking glasses, measuring cups, mirrors, windows Up to 5 days

Ceramics Examples: dishes, pottery, mugs 5 days

Paper Examples: mail, newspaper The length of time varies. Some strains of coronavirus live for only a few minutes on paper, while others live for up to 5 days.

Food Examples: takeout, produce. Coronavirus doesn’t seem to spread through food.

Water Coronavirus hasn’t been found in drinking water. If it does get into the water supply, your local water treatment plant filters and disinfects the water, which should kill any germs.

Fabrics Examples: clothes, linens There’s not much research about how long the virus lives on fabric, but it’s probably not as long as on hard surfaces.

Shoes One study tested the shoe soles of medical staff in a Chinese hospital intensive care unit (ICU) and found that half were positive for nucleic acids from the virus. But it’s not clear whether these pieces of the virus cause infection. The hospital’s general ward, which had people with milder cases, was less contaminated than the ICU.

Skin and hair There’s no research yet on exactly how long the virus can live on your skin or hair. Rhinoviruses, which cause colds, survive for hours.

https://www.webmd.com/lung/how-long-covid-19-lives-on-surfaces

So what is my point to all this?

If people who may not even be aware they are carriers of ANY disease spread their germs and contaminate envelopes and parcels imagine the knock on effect this has on th population. First the parcels and envelopes get picked up and sent to a sorting office where multiple people handle mail. Imagine how many people may get infected simply by that one task alone?

Yes but it is embedded into our brains we must wash our hands frequently, but how many of us actually do? People are not OCD like me may be complacent about touching things and them washing hands. All it takes is for an infected person to touch several surfaces and someone else then gets contaminated. You not only need to clean your hands but everything you come into contact with. Germs live on surfaces for days.

I am a suffered of contamination OCD I have been for over 30 years so I am more aware than anyone about cross contamination and germs and will not touch something that has been touched by someone else without disinfecting the item first. With mail that can be difficult to disinfect, hence I use disposable latex gloves. The same goes with outer packaging of food and toiletries and household products.

You have to think outside the box (no pun intended), the items have been shipped from somewhere before ending up on our shelves, imagine how many people have touched that item before you?

You will never be able to stop any virus from spreading if not enough is done to:

SPREAD “Germ Cross Contamination” AWARENESS to the Masses.

This has to be done with media amplification.

How is Coronavirus is spread?

According to current evidence, the COVID-19 virus is primarily transmitted between people through respiratory droplets and contact routes. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-background-information/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-epidemiology-virology-and-clinical-features#:~:text=According%20to%20current%20evidence%2C,%2C%20faeces%20and%20urine.

This means the virus comes from the mouth, from sneezing and coughing and what else is our mouths…..SALIVA!

FINAL NOTES:

If you intend on sending mail and have to seal envelopes and postage stamps get a sponge from the kitchen or bathroom and soak it with water, then wipe the envelope or stamps with it, NEVER USE SALIVA.

When handling goods always disinfect outer packaging whenever possible and when handling mail use disposable gloves.

On another note about spreading awareness I for one do not buy tabloids, do not watch terrestrial TV so how can people like myself be alerted of cross contamination? I have an answer social media push notifications.

ADDENDUM:

According to a study conducted early on in the pandemic found the virus lost infectivity on paper within three hours, says Professor Mark Harris, from the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Leeds.

Prof Harris told HuffPost UK it is “highly unlikely” you’d spread Covid by licking an envelope – or catch it by touching an envelope that had been licked. Furthermore, the average time an envelope would probably have spent in a postbox would be no more than three hours waiting to be collected. By the time it’s been through the postal service, three hours will most definitely have passed.

(What about parcels which also have stamps and have to be taken physically to post offices or given to couriers)? sorry but I am not convinced...

“However my thoughts on this are, for example, an elderly person who has a friend, family member, carer or neighbor asks them to post their mail for them they essentially would cross-contaminate”.

Caution

Vulnerable People Who Have Had: https://www.lemtrada.com/

Vulnerable People who have had Alemtuzumab should get additional medical advice before taking the PFIZER-BIONTECH COVID-19 VACCINE.

My daughter was treated with the drug Alemtuzuzumab.

Alemtuzumab WAS a medication used to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia and multiple sclerosis. On July 3, 2020, Sanofi Genzyme was notified that our Lemtrada Home Phlebotomy Partner, Examination Management Services Inc., (EMSI) has gone out of business.

What Lemtrada warning said:

LEMTRADA can cause serious side effects including:

Serious autoimmune problems: Some people receiving LEMTRADA develop a condition where the immune cells in your body attack other cells or organs in the body (autoimmunity), which can be serious and may cause death. Serious autoimmune problems may include:

  • Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), is a condition of reduced platelet counts in your blood that can cause severe bleeding that may cause life‑threatening problems. Call your healthcare provider (HCP) right away if you have any of the following symptoms: easy bruising; bleeding from a cut that is hard to stop; coughing up blood; heavier menstrual periods than normal; bleeding from your gums or nose that is new or takes longer than usual to stop; small, scattered spots on your skin that are red, pink, or purple
  • Kidney problems called anti‑glomerular basement membrane disease, which, if not treated, can lead to severe kidney damage, kidney failure that needs dialysis, a kidney transplant, or death. Call your HCP right away if you have any of the following symptoms: swelling of your legs or feet; blood in the urine (red or tea‑colored urine); decrease in urine; fatigue; coughing up blood

It is important for patients to have blood and urine tests before they receive, while on treatment, and every month for 4 years or longer after they receive their last LEMTRADA infusion.

***Thoughts From the Editor of this Post.

As with every drug we take there is an element of risk hence that is why we have leaflets inside the packaging about what the drug is and what side effects there are.

As a carer and a concerned mum, it is my duty to know if my daughter should have the vaccine, the following telephone numbers had auto-response messages saying the lines were busy before the calls were disconnected after my daughter tried phoning today.

029 218 36318

029 218 36319

029 218 36323

029 218 36340

We are located in Cardiff UK so hence these are Cardiff Numbers. If you are outside Wales you should look up your local health board in your region.

I advised my daughter to phone 111 and no one could advise her and she was told that someone would phone her back.

Upon further fact checking I personally phoned the secretary of the Professor of Neurology in Cardiff and I explained that my daughter was a patient and the secretary directed me to this site: https://cavuhb.nhs.wales/our-services/ms-multiple-sclerosis/ (The site does not explain anything about my concerns about diminished immune response) I also recited screenshot no 2 with my concerns and was told that all MS patients should have the vaccine although she could not explain what diminished immune response meant:

Immunocompromised persons, including individuals receiving immunosuppressant therapy, may have a diminished immune response to the vaccine. No data are available about the concomitant use of immunosuppressants.
As with any vaccine, vaccination with COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 may not protect all vaccine recipients.

So obviously not leaving any stone unturned and wanting to know what “diminished immune response” meant I found the following information:

Diminished Immune Response Meaning:

A diminished immune response underlies age-related SARS-CoV-2 pathologies – PubMed (nih.gov)

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/primary-immunodeficiency/symptoms-causes/syc-20376905

Reading between the lines as I am no expert and I stand corrected if I am wrong, from what I understand my daughter should she decide on having the vaccine today will have her immune system diminished so there is no way for her to fight the virus. Furthermore and I quote: “No data is available about the concomitant use of immunosuppressants – may not protect all vaccine recipients“.

This tells me that it has no been tested on immune suppressant drugs or patients who have had immune suppressants, hence this is open for debate.

Hand Sanitisers

hand Sanitizers Banner

Hand Sanitisers.

Hand sanitizers, love them or hate them, we all have to use them.

Being a sufferer of OCD I have tried and tested my fair share of hand sanitisers in my time. My brain seems to analyze where germs get cross contaminated and I use more hand sanitizer than the average person so I should have some knowledge of which ones work and which ones don’t.

Ultimately my favorite brands are Dettol & Carex and I prefer the aloe vera versions as a personal preference:

When buying hand sanitizer it is best to stick to well-known brands that are regulated by EU Biocides Regulation 528/2012.

There are many fly-by-night sellers on eBay and Etsy that claim that their brands kill germs. I would avoid buying from these retailers at all costs, as most make their own concoctions and sell them under their own labels unregulated.

If a hand sanitizer brand does not have its own website dedicated to the product name I would not buy from them. Anyone can cook something up in their kitchen.

You can never be too careful with germs.

If a company dedicated its time to making a product a household name it will spend money on advertising. If you have never heard of them or you buy an unknown brand from a stall in a market because it is cheap, you have to question what you are putting on your hands.

In hindsight, these brands should be able to prove that the product matches the claims, so if a product makes a certain claim, such as it kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, then it should fulfill that claim.

However, I have recently received some samples from a company selling ‘Dr. Brown’ Hand Sanitisers. I told them I would give them a review and even though I love the high street brands, I think if there was a shortage of hand sanitizers, I would not hesitate to use this company or if I had a lot of employees I would certainly give them a go.

I received both citrus and lavender.

I found them to be slightly on the runny side rather than gel although there was an element of gel in the composition.

It definitely wafted alcohol and took a couple of seconds to evaporate but once the smell had gone it left a pleasant aroma behind that lingered. My favorite was Lavender out of the two.

Final Thoughts:

**Warning!!!

If you are a Gas or Electrical Engineer DO NOT USE ALCOHOL-BASED FLAMABLE HAND SANITISERS around naked flames or sparks.

The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers has issued a safety alert, stating a build-up of static can create an invisible flame from the ignition source whereby the hand sanitizer on one’s hands can then ignite. It is recommended you wash your hands in hot soapy water to get rid of all traces of hand sanitizer before commencing work.

Electrical Safety 5-Year Checks

Cowboys

Electrical Safety 5-Year Checks.

I wrote a while back about an electrical engineers company in Cardiff (UK) that did not notice that there was a problem with my kitchen hot zone in my property when they came to do an electrical inspection approximately a year ago and as a consequence caused a domino effect, whereby my cooker which was delivered on December 17th, 2020 to be precise was not fitted until the 11th January 2021, because it was difficult to get anyone out to resolve the problem and then fit it.

I was then subjected to having take-outs at a cost of £50 per day for two meals per two people over 25 days period a total of £1,250. My Christmas was ruined.

Moving forward to today I get a message from my landlord’s assistant who says the same company that came to do the electrical inspection a year ago is coming tomorrow to do an annual check.

I responded and said unless it is mandatory I would prefer no visitors, to which she replied it was and it has to be done by law.

Obviously, I never take things at face value and I decided to do some research this is what I found the screenshot follows after the PDF:

landlords-guide-england-and-wales-june-2020-5-YEAR-TEST-1

Now considering the UK has a “stay at home ruling” you would think minimizing contact with other people would be of the highest priority but somehow people are being so blasé about the Pandemic that it is starting to make my blood boil.

Secondly, the Landlords Assistant whom I assume should have done some training with ‘Rent Smart Wales’ would know that the electrical tests are every five years not annually. It is the Gas Safety Checks that have to be checked annually.

However, I am going to have some fun tomorrow when the Electrical Engineers arrive and will ask them to comment on the following questions:

  1. Why they are doing Electrical Inspections on an annual basis when it says every five years? (already had this answered, they are apparently doing fire alarm inspections instead).
  2. Why did they fail to notice a problem with the kitchen hot zone a year ago?
  3. Why they failed to move the socket from the hot zone on the 17th of December and only covered it with a plastic covering? ( According to the electrician today that was ok. No this is not fine as the plastic could melt from the heat).
  4. Why they fitted a light on the same circuit as the banister light which when one light blows the electricity trip? (He said that yes when the light goes it will trip the electrics but if the bulb goes on the light which is positioned in a dangerous place I still have to change it as it will continue tripping otherwise. So that was a waste of time installing the second light).
  5. Why they changed the bathroom light which was already bathroom safe for another one, just to make extra money? (I never got around to answering this question).
  6. Why they fitted an extra three smoke alarms on top of the one I already had, considering my flat has one floor and I should have one alarm on each floor? (he said by law I had to have one in the living room, on the landing, in the kitchen (heat detector), and at the entrance to my flat, we were having a full-blown argument as he was persistent that I was wrong).
  7. Why they did not spot the washing machine was plugged into an extension lead, which was trailing on the ground, and not plugged into a wall socket which I did not have behind my machine? (if there was a leak and water went over my extension lead, well all I can say is, I would be toast)? (I mentioned about this and he the best thing would be for me to lodge a complaint with the company, once I get the information from the government I will be emailing these electricians and reporting them).
  8. Who will compensate me for all the money I wasted on take-outs?
  9. Where does it say I have to have annual fire alarm checks done? (I asked the electrician and he could not give me an answer I wanted the name of the website to fact check).

Considering this company is registered with the electrical safety register I would like to know who taught them about electrical safety inspections.

Furthermore, my daughter is classed as a vulnerable person according to the government, so why is it that people insist on visiting my property when I do not want them to? It’s all getting beyond a joke.

In the meantime, I highly recommend “First Phase Electrical – Electricians Wales”, if you have any electrical emergency work that needs doing. Give “Jeff Smith” a call or visit his website: www.electricianswales.co.uk

VISIT WALES NO 1 BEST REGULATED ELECTRICIANS!

UPDATE:

22/01/21

I stand corrected I am not having an electrical inspection done after I pointed out the 5-year rule to my landlord’s assistant, instead, I am having a fire alarm system checked but as always I leave no stone unturned and have found this PDF from the Governments website relating to Fire Alarm Inspections. There is no mention of how often fire alarms should be tested by a qualified electrician and besides it is not rocket science to test the alarm yourself which is recommended that everyone does anyway.

This is now an invasion of my privacy, against covid regulations, and a risk to my daughter’s health.

covid-19-coronavirus-and-the-enforcement-of-standards-in-rented-properties-in-wales-1

My grievance is not only the hot zone and money I wasted on take-outs, but the number of visits I have had to my accommodation outside of my immediate bubble to the total of 9 people relating to my landlord’s decision, within the last month. This is now wearing me down. Had they all come at the same time, I could have had a party.

  1. Two DHL Appliance Delivery Engineers.
  2. An Electrician capped the socket the same day as DHL Delivery.
  3. My Landlord the following day and his assistant x total 3 visits.
  4. The Gas engineer came and went without installing the cooker.
  5. The Two Gas Engineers that finally installed my cooker.
  6. An engineer today checked the fire alarms.

A total of nine people in the last month have entered my accommodation.

Update 18.33 pm 22/01/21

I had my visitor today person number 9 in the space of one month test the fire alarms and basically, this is all he did, he sprayed some smoke from a canister directly below the alarm, waited for the alarm to activate and disarmed it, wrote something down, and off he went.

I have since written to the government to confirm what legislation there is for checking fire alarms and how often.

From what I have read one has to check the alarm once a month.

If this is the case there is no way on this earth I am allowing any more visitors to my accommodation.

I pointed the hot zone out to him and he agreed the electrical engineers overlooked the hot zone but I could not blame the company but the engineers.

He continued to say that capping the wall socket was ok. Obviously another cowboy to the list of cowboys.

Here is my capped wall socket, which is now behind a splashback, which today’s electrician said was fine.

Surgical Face Masks Conspiracy Theories.

Kourtney Kardashian is in news today for spreading conspiracy theories to her 100 million followers.

To be honest I have not thought about face masks and how safe they are until I started to read about the controversy on the internet today.

I am not one to take things at face value (no pun intended), I always try to do some research and go on legitimate websites to source information.

The following website was where I first saw the allegations:

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/lifestyle/style/kourtney-kardashian-slammed-for-unfounded-claim-that-face-masks-cause-cancer/ar-BB1aFPyM?ocid=msedgntp

So this is the site I found regarding the explanation of “What Causes Cancer”.

According to cancer.org Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), Teflon, and Related Chemicals may be a potential health concern: https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/teflon-and-perfluorooctanoic-acid-pfoa.html

Unfortunately, Kourtney has not done her research properly as the routes by which people may be exposed to PFOA are not known, and it is unclear what steps people might take to reduce their exposure.

Furthermore, the coating of PFOA on fabrics is at low levels which is unclear if it would cause health issues and the allegations are all circumstantial.

At the end of the day we are at risk every day from polluted air to the food we eat and what we drink and we have to either worry ourselves senseless or just live on the edge of caution. If you feel that there may be any truth to ‘Kourtney Kardashians’ allegations use alternative face coverings or make your own. There are plenty of facemasks that are not the traditional blue surgical masks used by health workers on the market as you can see from the links below:

Schools In Wales On Lockdown News

https://www.cdc.gov/

Schools in Wales on Lockdown again.

I wrote an article a few days ago about my concerns how one particular college in Cardiff is being complacent about the fact of social distancing and the further I try to make my point heard the more silence I get.

I firstly contacted my local M.P on Facebook, by email and on LinkedIn as well as her office and you would think considering I have on average about 1000 emails and manage to mark the ones for reply and usually replying the same day you would think that there would be no excuse for her to acknowledge my messages. Yet my daughter also had the same problem with her tutor who abruptly said that she was a busy women and could not reply to everyone.

Obviously if an email have been marked as urgent one should not ignore it, so spare me your lame excuses why you cannot reply. Absolutely no excuse what so ever not to reply to an urgent email.

My daughter knows how many emails I read on a daily basis and how many inboxes I have open, yet I manage to reply to everyone that needs replying to.

So seeing as I thought I had exhausted all my options trying to contact my MP, my daughter and I tried contacting the local council whom said they could not help and for my daughter to phone the Welsh Government. After being put on hold for about 20 minutes on a 0300 number my daughter spoke to someone who also said they could not help and transferred her to another line which went to voice mail.

Not giving up I also decided to write and email to the Welsh Government and also to the Head of the College. Usually when you write an email to the council you get an auto-responder message saying they have received your email and someone will be getting back to you, so it is slightly concerning that I have not had an auto-responder message from the Welsh Government.

Obviously I am not the type of person to give up and will not leave any stone unturned, hence I will start sharing my findings across the internet if I do not get a satisfactory conclusion.

It has been surveyed that 86% of parents living in Cardiff UK are unsatisfied with school support over lock-down. https://newsfromwales.co.uk/news/86-of-cardiff-parents-unsatisfied-with-school-support-over-lockdown/

Why does that no surprise me. Its the people that work in Government at the very top in Houses of Parliament that need to address the issues concerned and pass it down across all networks. But if there are grey areas this only spells a recipe for disaster.

There have been 9 schools in Wales that have gone on Lock-down as of today, which is very concerning considering the experts say younger children have better immune systems than adults yet the problem is now in schools. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/coronavirus-schoolhttps://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/coronavirus-schools-lockdown-cases-covid-18889614s-lockdown-cases-covid-18889614

So what does this say if colleges do not have to maintain social distancing as quoted by my daughter’s tutor. What about cross contamination and students do not have to wear masks in class only in the foyers. One cannot make up rules as you go along as someone showing no signs in a classroom of the virus could be a carrier and could spread the virus to his/her class mates.

If Universities in Cardiff have to have Covid-19 tests done this should apply to every student of every age group regardless if it is high School, Sixth Form or College.

So my daughter’s life is at risk and I am getting anxious for her health well being as I do not seem to be getting any answers.

I will update you if I get any news.

As this afternoon has progressed I sent an instant message to the https://www.facebook.com/PublicHealthWales/ after my daughter said they have time to post things on Facebook but have no one to answer her concerns.

Since doing some more digging I have found the contact detail for Health Secretary Matt Hancock and also the Minister of Health & Social Services in Wales Vaughan Gething, these will be the next people who I will be emailing especially when according to ‘London Loves Business’ https://londonlovesbusiness.com/break-the-rules-and-risk-a-second-wave-young-people-warned/ UK Health Secretary warned young people about the consequences of not maintaining social distancing, but has not addressed the fact that social distancing for young people not only should it be for the home and public places but for schools, colleges and univeristies.

In my opinion do not give tiny bits of information instead address all areas that are a high risk and set out plans and stick to them.

I personally think all school, colleges and universities should wear face masks in the classrooms as well as in the assembly rooms and corridors. Every student should have a corona-virus test done which should be compulsory and done regulatory. All students should maintain social distancing even if it means putting less students in class at any one time.

All students should be provided hand sanitiser that they would have to use before commencing class.

The classroom would have to disinfected before and after each lesson. That means all chairs, desks, equipment, floors, door handles and utensils would have to go through stringent cleansing.

By sharing and touching equipment and utensils including text books there is an element of possible cross contamination. (I personally will not touch anything that someone else has touched, I would have to use latex or vinyl gloves and sanitise the item or product first). Food on the other hand has its own set of rules and regulations https://www.food.gov.uk/food-safety I always check the use by dates and adhere to rules regarding cross contamination. Knowing I have cooked and prepared the food safely gives me piece of mind, considering I am a germ conscious.

I could easily write out a set of rules that would work but I am not paid to do their job….

Vulnerable People in Wales – Cross Contamination.

Cross Contimination.

Since lockdown vulnerable people have had letters instructing them what they can and cannot do from the governement in terms of social distancing. So the last letter was up to the 16th August 2020 in regards to shielding and that after the 16th vulnerable people did not have to shield but still had to maintain social distancing.

So what has changed in regards of Covid-19 are we less likely to contract it now seeing lockdown has been relaxed, as the next bit is confusing??

According to the Welsh government we have to continue to maintain the 2 metre rule when out in public at all times but in the same breathe students that go to College can no longer have online lessons but must attend class and in the case of my daughter who is classed as vulnerable (with a chronic disease) will have to sit in close proximity in a small class room for an hour or more cramped up with 24 other students. It is impossible to be two metres away from the next person. (How can social distancing be maintained) and god forbid if my daughter was to contract the disease who would be held accountable?

Obviously the pen pushers that are assigned jobs to make press releases may not be advised properly and just churn out rubbish without thinking outside the box.

The college have said that the Government have advised them that it is madantory for all students, staff and visitors to wear face masks in the corridors or foyers but inside the classroom it is optional (I think it should be mandantory for all students to sit two metres apart and wear face masks the classrooms to be disinfected before every lesson or all students need to be tested on a daily basis).

Now this is where my OCD head is coming in, if you can contract the virus in the corridors you can contract the virus in the classroom aswell.

These people that write these mandates should know the consequences of having a classroom full of people huddling together for an hour or so and should be made accountable if someone becomes ill because of their bad advice.

Vulnerable people should continue to have online lessons. Whatever is taught in the classroom is uploaded to the Colleges database where students can get access.

So even though it is not the College’s fault as they are only going by the guidlines set out by the Welsh Government, my daughters life is being put in imminent danger and if she was to be kicked off the course for making a fuss or in the case of her tutor who stated once when my daughter compalined about her pain in her legs (my daughter has multiple sclerosis) the tutor said and I quote “you’re being too dramatic”, then either way the college would be discriminating against disabled people.

The Welsh Governement should take extra precautions for people who are living with chronic diseases and not be blasé.

Llandough Hospital on the outskirts of Cardiff is full of Coronavirus patients, so the virus exists and we are on the verge of a second way.

By having people intermingling together only spells trouble.

Picture the scenario you have been wearing your mask all day and you may have interacted with Covid-19 people but you are oblivious that the germs sitting on the surface of your clothes and the devices such as your mobile phone and your mask. Germs can linger and last for upto a day according to Amesh A. Adalja, MD infectious disease expert, who is quoted in saying “I suspect that you can find viability of the virus for several hours to maybe a day on clothes,”.

https://www.health.com/condition/infectious-diseases/coronavirus/how-long-does-coronavirus-live-on-clothes

So you go home and you take your mask off, but do not change your clothes, you have then successfully cross contaminated everything you are in contact with.

According to experts who have commented in the England Journal of Medicine, COVID-19 can live on copper for up to four hours, on cardboard and porous fabrics for 24 hours and on stainless steel and plastic for up to to three days.

Other studies have shown the virus can remain on synthetic materials used in shoes like rubber for as long as five days.

So imagine you are in a classroom you have someone that is infected and they have spread their germs right around the room full of students. The droplets then land on your laptop, tablet or folder of your study notes and your pens, pencil case, nevermind your clothes.

More needs to be done about Germ Awareness and Cross Contamination.

Not everyone changes their clothes when they get in.

Not everyone disinfects their handbags, tablets or laptops or mobile phones.

Not everyone is aware of cross contamination and germ awareness www.germawareness.co.uk

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8165731/Coronavirus-DONT-need-worry-catching-COVID-19-clothes-soft-furnishings.html

……and my final thoughts are vulnerable people such as my daughter should still have online lessons. Furthermore today my daughter has been informed the lifts in her college will no longer be in use, there will be a one way system and she will have to climb 8 flights of stairs to get to her class (being disabled). Now considering her legs are bad as she suffers with MS I am afraid she could suffer a relapse not to mention the college is not disability friendly.
